The three providers

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google — cost and peer adoption, side by side.

Two questions decide this: what does each provider cost, and which peer institutions have already deployed it at scale? Both are answered below — alongside what each is, in 2026.

Provider 1 of 3

OpenAI · ChatGPT for institutions.

OpenAI is the most widely-deployed of the three providers in higher education. Its flagship offerings for institutions are ChatGPT Business (commercial) and ChatGPT Edu (academic)19, built on the GPT-5.5 model family. The April 2026 launch of Workspace Agents added native agentic execution inside enterprise tools like Salesforce, Slack, and HubSpot1. How peers have leveraged it

The Wharton School

Universal MBA access · new AI for Business major

In May 2024 Wharton announced a strategic investment in AI, providing access to all full-time and executive MBA students and establishing the AI & Analytics for Business program3. In April 2025 Wharton launched a new MBA major in Artificial Intelligence for Business alongside an undergraduate concentration4.

University of Oxford

First UK university with ChatGPT Edu for all · 5-year OpenAI partnership

In September 2025 Oxford became the first UK university to offer ChatGPT Edu to all staff and students, following an initial year of access for ~750 staff and researchers. The rollout is part of a five-year partnership with OpenAI that includes research grant funding and enterprise security5.

UCLA

First California university with ChatGPT Enterprise

UCLA introduced ChatGPT Enterprise in September 2024 — the first California university to do so. Access was extended to students, faculty, and staff engaged in teaching, learning, and research initiatives, with an open call for project submissions6.

California State University System

~460,000 students · 63,000 faculty & staff · ChatGPT Edu

In February 2025 the CSU system announced what it described as the nation's largest AI-empowered university system — providing ChatGPT Edu access to more than 460,000 students and over 63,000 faculty and staff. The deployment uses a "walled garden" architecture where student data does not train the underlying model7.

Provider 2 of 3

Anthropic · Claude for institutions.

Anthropic is widely treated as the "architect" of the three providers — careful, literal, and designed around safety. Claude Opus 4.7 is the current flagship model8. Claude for Education ships a Learning Mode designed to guide student reasoning rather than just produce answers — pedagogy first9. How peers have leveraged it

Northeastern University

Campus-wide Claude · 13 global campuses · April 2025

Northeastern signed a campus-wide agreement with Anthropic in April 2025, providing Claude access to all students, faculty, and staff across 13 global campuses10. The partnership foregrounds Learning Mode pedagogy9.

London School of Economics

Full campus Claude access · launch partner

LSE was named as an Anthropic launch partner for Claude for Education in April 2025, with Enterprise-tier Claude (with extended context) made available free to every LSE student and educator under a 12-month launch agreement. Student access opened in May 202511.

Champlain College

~2,000 undergrads · Vermont · 2-year free Claude Pro

Champlain — a small, private, career-focused undergraduate college — received campus-wide Claude Pro access for all students, faculty, and staff (on-campus and online), free for two years through June 2027. Joint classroom and research projects span digital forensics, cybersecurity, business entrepreneurship, and humanities12. The closest small-private peer to Babson in Anthropic's launch cohort.

Provider 3 of 3

Google · Gemini for institutions.

Google brings native multimodality (the only major AI model that handles video alongside text, image, and audio in a single pass) and a one-million-token context window, with Gemini 3.1 Pro as the current flagship13. Most universities deploy Gemini through Gemini for Education or Workspace Intelligence, which weaves Gemini into the Workspace tools many institutions already use14. How peers have leveraged it

Rice University

Campus-wide Gemini + NotebookLM · September 2025

Rice — a private research university with a strong business school — adopted Google's Gemini for Education and NotebookLM campus-wide for all students, faculty, and staff in September 2025, with the partnership grounded in "responsible AI"16.

University of Houston

System-wide Gemini for Education · full data sovereignty

The University of Houston announced a first-in-state systemwide deployment of Gemini for Education and NotebookLM in March 2026 — all students, faculty, and staff — with explicit data sovereignty: institutional data and research IP are not used to train public models17.

1,000+ institutions, 10M+ students

Google's published higher-ed footprint

Google's own roundup confirms Gemini for Education is in use at more than 1,000 higher-education institutions reaching over 10 million U.S. college students, including Brown, MIT, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida State, UC Riverside, Texas State, Rice, and the California Community Colleges18.

Putting it together

What this looks like, side by side.

Each provider has a distinct shape. OpenAI — the most widely-adopted, strongest on agentic execution — is at Wharton, Oxford, UCLA, and the CSU system. Anthropic — pedagogy-first, Learning Mode at its core — is at Northeastern, LSE, and Champlain. Google — multimodal and woven into Workspace — is at Rice, Houston, and a thousand other institutions reaching 10 million students.

All three are available now. Per-user pricing sits inside what institutions spend on routine software. Education tiers exist for exactly this kind of rollout. Peer institutions across the U.S. and U.K. have already deployed each at scale.
